There’s something about linen that screams tropical paradise. It conjures up visions of islanders strolling down the shore surrounded by a halo of palms trees with filmy material blowing in the breeze. The summer element evident in the fabric is undeniable. Imagine, for instance, a white button-down. Shift the fabrication from cotton to linen, and your mentality instantly changes.
The sweltering heat that summer brings is no match for this featherweight fabric. Linen is actually made from a flax plant and, according to an article in Vogue, “is scientifically proven to be a cooler fabric than cotton or silk.” Linen is also often cut in boxy silhouettes, which only adds to its list of pros. In hot, sticky temps, the last thing you want is stretchy fabric clinging to your skin.
These days, designers are implementing linen into so much more than just your typical button-down. On one end of the spectrum, we’ve seen it done in romantic, feminine blouses. On a more masculine note, linen has also been spotted on tailored trousers and boxy menswear. The bold are even going for a head-to-toe linen moment in the form of summer suiting—pants, shorts, or a skirt, take your pick. There is literally an option for everyone. Just beware of wrinkles!
